Supporting Uvalde

As part of our Good Work Austin community — business owners, financial contributors, community partners, and other supporters — we wanted to share an update on some of the work we've done in recent weeks.

Shortly after last week's tragedy in Uvalde, we received a phone call from our partners at World Central Kitchen. They needed somebody to travel to Uvalde to assess the situation and start providing meals until their team could arrive.

We are proud that a global operation like World Central Kitchen would turn to Good Work Austin for support in Texas. Because of the community we have built, they trusted our organization to step up.

Good Work Austin Managing Director Kevin Lawler drove to Uvalde that evening. Working with World Central Kitchen's team, he coordinated with local officials, non-profits, volunteers, restaurants, and food trucks to provide hundreds of meals throughout the day on Wednesday. World Central Kitchen staff arrived in Uvalde Wednesday evening, and worked to set up additional feeding locations on Thursday.

Together, we provided meals for affected families, blood donors, volunteers, grieving community members attending vigils and memorials, and workers providing around-the-clock services. Even after Kevin returned to Austin, World Central Kitchen staff and volunteers remained in Uvalde. Since the tragedy, World Central Kitchen and their partners have provided more than 7,000 meals, in addition to more than 2,000 snow cones for local children.

Back here in Austin, countless Good Work Austin member businesses stepped up as well, donating some of their proceeds to support the Uvalde community.

Thank you for supporting Good Work Austin. Our staff and member businesses work every day to support the local hospitality industry, feed our community, and build capacity to ensure that we are prepared to respond when Austin and surrounding communities are in need.
