What is Good Work Austin?

Good Work Austin (GWA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that partners with food workers and businesses to shape an industry where workers are valued and locally owned businesses succeed. Our mission is to foster healthy careers in the local food and beverage industry through professional development and advocacy for more equitable practices. Our vision is a healthier Austin connected and uplifted by the local food and beverage community.

What is the Good Work Austin Board?

The GWA Board of Directors serves as the governance body, providing strategic guidance, oversight, and support to advance the mission of the organization. Below is an overview of the board and what it means to be a board member.

The GWA Board of Directors is responsible for:

  1. Strategic Leadership: Shaping the organization's long-term vision, goals, and priorities.

  2. Financial Oversight: Ensuring the financial health of the organization through budgeting, fundraising, and resource allocation.

  3. Policy Development: Establishing policies that guide the organization’s work and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.

  4. Executive Support: Hiring, evaluating, and supporting the Executive Director to execute the mission and strategic goals.

  5. Ambassadorship: Acting as advocates for GWA in the community, promoting its mission and values.

  6. Accountability: Monitoring organizational performance and ensuring alignment with GWA’s mission and values.

Expectations for Board Members

Board members are expected to:

  • Commit to the Mission: Share a passion for advancing equitable and sustainable business practices.

  • Attend Meetings: Participate in regular board meetings and any additional committee or special meetings as needed.

  • Engage Actively: Contribute to discussions, decision-making, and committee work.

  • Support Fundraising Efforts: Assist in securing financial resources through personal contributions, connecting with donors, or organizing events.

  • Represent GWA: Serve as a public representative of the organization, building relationships and partnerships in the community.

  • Provide Expertise: Share knowledge, skills, or networks that benefit GWA’s programs and initiatives.

Who Should Apply

We are seeking individuals who:

  • Have experience in areas such as nonprofit governance, business leadership, finance, marketing, legal, DEI, etc. 

  • Are committed to social impact and align with GWA’s values.

  • Bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences that strengthen the board’s decision-making and understanding of the community we serve.

  • Are willing to dedicate time, energy, and expertise to help GWA achieve its goals.

Board Commitment

The commitment could be up to 5-10 hours per month depending on your involvement.  

  • Term Length: Board members serve a two-year term, with the option to renew for additional terms.

  • Time Commitment: You will be expected to attend six general meetings per year plus committee meetings (Finance, Development, etc.) as needed for the committee that you choose to join. 

  • Financial Contribution: Board members are encouraged to make an annual financial contribution that is meaningful to them and reflective of their capacity (no minimum amount required). 

How do I join the GWA Board?

If you are interested in joining the GWA Board, you can nominate yourself or another candidate through our online form. If your qualifications align with our current needs, we will reach out to schedule an in-person meeting. Following this, you will be invited to observe a GWA Board meeting. Should you wish to proceed with your application, the Board will vote on your membership at their next meeting. 

Not all applicants will be invited for an interview immediately. In some cases, we prioritize candidates with specific expertise, such as finance, communications, or human resources, to fill current needs.
