  • Kara Hanaoka, MA

    Kara Hanaoka, MA, assumed the role of Executive Director at Good Work Austin in July 2024, bringing with her over 13 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Widely recognized as a purpose-driven leader, connector, and strategist, Kara has consistently guided organizations to achieve tangible, transformative outcomes. Her expertise lies in designing and securing funding for innovative, award-winning programs that have positively impacted the lives of over a million Texans. Earlier in her career, Kara spent eight years in the food and beverage industry, where she cultivated a passion to advocate for equitable food systems and policy reform. Her leadership and advocacy efforts have significantly influenced community-driven initiatives across Austin, Texas, where she currently resides and remains actively engaged. Kara currently serves on the board of the ACLU of Texas, furthering her commitment to civil liberties and social justice.

  • Nitza Cuevas

    Program Director

    Nitza Cuevas, originally from Virginia, earned a BFA in silversmithing from Virginia Commonwealth University before moving to Austin, Texas. Her diverse career spans 15 years in the restaurant industry, farming, nonprofit food access, and mutual aid organizing. Inspired by the pandemic’s impact on the food industry, she joined Good Work Austin in November 2022, as Program Director, championing local food businesses as vital community centers. Nitza is also an active volunteer in community-based food access and policy initiatives.

  • Magda Espinoza

    Program Manager

    Magda Espinoza is a committed nonprofit leader with several years of experience supporting social justice initiatives in Austin, Texas. Previously having worked in the field of clinical psychology as well as in higher education, her foundation in research and program management has shaped her expertise in community collaboration, strategic planning, and developing high-impact programs. Magda is passionate about fostering an equitable society and is focused on empowering Austin’s vibrant food industry. Originally from Syracuse, New York and holding a degree in Psychology from Binghamton University, she brings a well-rounded perspective to her work and is dedicated to creating lasting, positive change in the communities she serves. Outside of work Magda enjoys playing soccer, painting, and trying new recipes.

  • Neena Perez

    Culinary Instructor

    Vennette “Neena” Perez is a culinary professional, educator, and mentor with over 15 years of experience in culinary instruction, hospitality leadership, and program development. Passionate about using food as a tool for empowerment, Neena has dedicated her career to creating opportunities for underserved communities through hands-on culinary education. Originally from Connecticut, Neena served as Director of Culinary Operations at a nonprofit for over nine years, where she led large-scale culinary initiatives, developed community programs, and mentored aspiring chefs. She also helped launch culinary programs at Norwalk Community College, including the first-ever youth culinary initiative for underprivileged students. As CEO and Chef Instructor of The Kiddie Kitchen, Neena created an interactive cooking program that taught culinary skills to children and adults. In addition to her culinary expertise, Neena has been a life coach for the past eight years, helping women build thriving businesses. Neena enjoys creating recipes, supporting women entrepreneurs, and hosting her podcast, Straight Talk No Sugar Added, where she empowers others to pursue their dreams.
